Sometimes #datagovernance programs need a jolt of energy to kick things off, or bring them back to life. Here are some of the places where we look to help build momentum and #datamanagement muscle memory.

If your implementation is on the business side, this is a great time to kick off your Data Domain Hierarchy and Business Glossary. This will help speed data classification and maturity assessments, simplify data requirements and easily identify project impacts.

If your implementation is more technical, consider collecting a data catalog or data dictionary (or both) as part of your next project – with the intent of growing it over time. This will help users find the data they need to do their job and will begin to build trust in the data they use.

At the end of the day, focus your data governance program where there is value to the organization. If you’re not sure where to start, interview your stakeholders and those who work with data daily. Listen to their “good, bad & ugly” stories and figure out how you can use your Data Governance Toolset and Data Management outcomes to have a positive impact to your organization.

Very often, there are many things to do – but don’t let this overwhelm you. In fact, this is a great opportunity to bring together the initial members of your Data Governance Council to help prioritize and resource the work ahead of you.
